South Congress is not technically a neighborhood. Technically its one street of shopping, restaurants, nightlife and food trucks. But, as the area has become more and more popular, the area to the east and west of South Congress which are technically Bouldin Creek and Travis Heights have been lumped into the South Congress or “SoCo” neighborhood.
South Congress is Increasingly Popular
As residents continue to flock to areas with a high degree of walkability, South Congress continues to grow in popularity. The SoCo area has come a long way in just a few short years. Residents in neighboring Dawson neighborhood are largely responsible for cleaning up the area and making it the tourist attraction you see today. You’ll find several trendy bars, restaurants, eclectic shopping and some of the famous Austin food trucks. The first Thursday of every month, you’ll find a street fair with vendors that’s been named First Thursday. But, you don’t need to wait for a special event to find a lot of people in South Congress. Just about every night you’ll find a steady stream of tourists and locals getting a bite to eat or shopping in one of the shops.
Living in South Congress
Someone who would feel at home living in South Congress lives by the motto “Keep Austin Weird” or at least can live with people who live by that motto. As most of the homes are older, it will also be best if you don’t need more than 1,800-2,200 sq ft of living space. Though you can find some newer remodels with more space and more modern amenities, the majority of the homes are smaller and older.
